Stop & Shop Rejects Union Pay Offer

Springfield, Mass – Stop & Shop employees in southern New England kept working Feb. 29 after the supermarket chain’s contract with the United Food and Commercial Workers expired over the weekend.

Daniel P. Clifford, president of UFCW Local 1459 in Springfield, said that management had “stormed out” of contract talks after rejecting a union pay proposal. But negotiations are continuing between the company and the UFCW, which represents 35,000 Stop & Shop workers in Massachusetts, Connecticut and Rhode Island. “We still have a long way to go in negotiations, but we are determined to stand together until our members get a fair deal,” Clifford wrote in an email to members.
