Sophie Gerson Foundation Honors Labor and Community Leaders

New York, NY – On Tuesday February 7th at the Village Underground in Manhattan, the Sophie Gerson Healthy Youth program  held its annual fundraiser.

The event was co-chaired by  Manhattan Borough  President Gail Brewer and Bronx  Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr.   Former Council Member Alan J. Gerson and founder of the foundation, coordinated the event.

Noted labor attorney Arthur Schwartz  and LaborPress Publisher Neal Tepel assisted in presenting the awards. Entertainment was provided by legendary musicians David Amram  and  Avram  Pengas.

The first honorees was Shaun D, Francois , President of Local 372. President Francois represents school aides, lunchroom workers, crossing guards family assistants, parent coordinators, and family workers who are all critical towards providing a safe and secure environment in our schools.

Another honoree was Earl Philips the  Secretary- Treasurer of TWU Local 100. Earl was recognized for initiating a program that provides opportunities for high school and college graduates to pursue careers in the transportation industry. Mr. Philips also contines to work with union members and the police on safety issues. 

We also recognized the achievements of the Honorable Jenny Lam Low. As a   Chair of the Board of the Chinese American Planning Council, Jenny  has been instrumental in the agency developing services and educational programs for children, seniors and immigrants.

Dr. Marc Wilkenfeld, Chief of Occupational Medicine at Winthrop Hospital was also an honoree. He has been providing medical care for those affected by 9/11 for several years.
