New York, NY -BuzzFeed reports that airport workers in  New York and New Jersey gained a significant win and union recognition.

The Service Employees International Union (SEIU),  now represents airport skycaps, baggage handlers and other airport workers. In addition, the union has successfully negotiated a $15 an hour wage base.

Vice president of SEIU’s 32B Shirley Aldebol, told BuzzFeed, the union will continue to organize workers and negotiate for better raises and improved working conditions. BuzzFeed calls the airport workers’ gains modest but critically important since union recognition by employers is always significant.

Over eight thousand employees gained a raise and union recognition. Besides wages and union recognition, the agreement covers seniority, disciplinary policies and scheduling.
