Sauget, IL - Maintenance workers at Holten Meat in Sauget, Illinois joined the nine-day-old strike by production workers Mar. 27.
The about 15 maintenance workers walked out after their separate contract expired, according to United Food and Commercial Workers Local 655 spokesperson Collin Reischman. He told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch that Holten never offered them a contract extension, and that the union would not deal with their contract until the company settles its contract dispute with the about 250 production workers on strike. Local 655 union is trying to get language in the contract that explicitly says night-shift workers can use their seniority to apply for other jobs at the plant, such as moving to the day shift.
