San Antonio Hotel Workers Win First Union Contracts

After more than five years of organizing by UNITE HERE, the two large Hyatt chain hotels on San Antonio’s Riverwalk tourist attraction have signed five-year contracts with the union.

“These are the first hotels on the San Antonio Riverwalk to have the union, and to have union contracts," UNITE HERE spokesperson Danna Schneider said. She said the deal includes annual wage increases of about 4% for low-paid workers such as housekeepers, bringing back about 100 jobs that had been outsourced to contractors, and “protections” for undocumented immigrants working at the hotels. 

“There is lots of talk about how do we bring people up into the middle class, and we think this is the way,” Schneider said. “We would love to see the entire Riverwalk have the same benefits as the two Hyatt hotels.” Read more
