After ten years this landmark musical has been revived on Broadway. The musical is based on the Alice Walker’s novel and stars Jennifer Hudson, Cynthia Erivo and Danielle Brooks.

The director John Doyle enables the characters to exude emotional power pathos and hope.  John  Doyle’s direction  enables the actors to shine and engenders the virtues of the story. Cynthia Erivo portrayal of Celle gives a performance that has Tony award stamped all over it.  Jennifer Hudson’s portrayal of Shug Avery is fabulous and her singing first class.  Danielle Brooks as Sofia raises the roof in the “Hell No” number. Overall the melodious songs employ gospel, blues, rag time, jazz as well as some beautiful ballads which enable the actors to tell the story of personal growth.
The show is a tribute to the development of grit and value of perseverance and resiliency and serves as a model for womanhood.
