Queens, NY – On Saturday April 16, a devastating 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck the coastal region of Ecuador. As an Ecuadorian American and as an elected official from Queens, which is home to roughly 100,000 Ecuadorians, to say this has had a dramatic affect on me is an understatement.
Over the last week, I have spoken to constituents who have lost family members and property, but with that I also have seen great unity and support. My colleagues in government, community leaders, and clergy from all backgrounds have to come together to send a message to the entire Ecuadorian community living here and suffering back in Ecuador: you are our family, you are our neighbors and we mourn with you. Ecuador may be a small country, but our heart is big.
The outpouring of support in the form of donations made by residents of Jackson Heights, Corona, and Elmhurst re-enforces just how proud I am to be elected to represent all of you in the New York State Assembly.
Thank you from the bottom of my heart.
