Philadelphia Teachers Lambaste School ‘Turnaround’ Plans

Philadelphia, PA – The city’s plans to “turn around” four schools by getting rid of all their teachers came under fire from the Philadelphia Federation of Teachers April 6.

“If you didn't know the school was slated for essentially a destabilizing turnaround, you would never have known that by walking through the school,” American Federation of Teachers President Randi Weingarten said after touring one of the four schools. Under the turnaround plan, school Superintendent William R. Hite has said, all staff will be required to reapply for their jobs, and no more than half would be able to get them back. Katie McGinty, the PFT-endorsed candidate in the Democratic primary for the U.S. Senate, said she had talked to a third grader who was disappointed that the library has been closed because the school can’t afford to hire a librarian. “Maybe that's where we should start,” she added.
