l just learned that Yum Brands—which owns fast-food chains Taco Bell, KFC, and Pizza Hut—created a new paid parental leave program. But here’s the fine print: Yum’s ‘generosity’ only extends to individuals working at its corporate headquarters, but not to those working in their extremely profitable restaurants.
Being there for a new child is non-negotiable! Until we gain the universal right to take paid leave to care for an aging parent, a seriously ill loved one, or a new child, too many of us are stuck in the powerless position of choosing between our families and our jobs. Yum Brands needs to do everything it can to make this choice easier for the people who make their tacos, fry their chicken and bake their pizzas.
Women and men working in the fast-food industry have come together in record numbers to stand up for jobs that allow them to make ends meet. This relentless activism of working people led to cities and states across the country raising the minimum wage. It’s time for fast-food giants like Yum to recognize the growing chorus of Americans demanding workplaces that value families.
Paid leave must be available to everyone, not just those already at the top.
