Millions of people throughout the U.S. suffer a steep decline in their credit scores due to one thing: medical debt. Now, the Biden administration has proposed a new action that will remove medical bills from most credit reports, a huge win for those who are hit hard by the previous practice. National Nurses United, the country’s largest union of registered nurses, is part of those who are calling this a huge win. This new rule will increase privacy protections, prohibit consumer reporting agencies from including medical debt on credit reports, and prevent debt collectors from coercing payments for inaccurate or false bills. NNU President Nancy Hagans, RN, said, “[Patients] should not have to declare bankruptcy for receiving the health care they need.”
