Buffalo, NY – The 55th Annual Variety Kids Telethon raised more than $1.02 million over the weekend – with Organized Labor from across Western New York accounting for $52,000, the Western New York AFL-CIO Area Labor Federation (WNYALF) announced.
The Western New York Labor Movement stepped up its efforts this year to aid the telethon, whose dollars raised go to support the Women & Children’s Hospital of Buffalo and numerous other area children’s charities.
“This year’s support for the Children’s Hospital Variety Club Telethon was ‘stronger than in at least ten years.’ The WNYALF decided to ‘spearhead’ the effort by coordinating and combining the contributions of our many Labor Unions and the result was ‘astounding,’” WNYALF President Richard Lipsitz said Wednesday (April 5th).
More than $44,000 was raised by dozens of WNYALF Union Affiliates, with the biggest contribution coming from the United Auto Workers (UAW). The WNYALF also raised an additional ($6,300) from (its) guitar and Buffalo Bills ticket raffle and another $1,750 from the ‘five-minute fundraising challenge’ that was issued during the WNYALF’s recently-held Annual meeting. All told our contribution was more than ($52,000),” Lipsitz said.
