Local 14’s Outstanding Apprentice Nominee, Edgar Sanchez, 24, was born in the Bronx and joined the Navy while still a teen.
At 19, he became a Damage Controlman aboard the aircraft carrier USS John C. Stennis, charged with helping to prevent and contain hazardous situations. After leaving the Navy, Edgar continued his education by acquiring his CDL (Commercial Driver’s License) and his NCCCO (National Commission for the Certification of Crane Operators) crane certification.
Sanchez started in the IUOE Local 14 apprentice program in December, 2016, and is now working on the LaGuardia Airport job where he has operated
excavators, lulls, concrete pumps, rollers, and cranes. IUOE Local 14 training directors have been especially impressed with his enthusiasm and dedication to becoming a talented and professional operating engineer. In just two years, Sanchez has acquired all of his equipment certifications and has also completed numerous NYCDOB approved courses – OSHA and HazMat certifications, among them. IUOE Local 14 is already looking to Sanchez to become an indispensable mentor for future apprentices.
Says Edgar, “My on-the-job training has far surpassed my expectations. Learning from the Local 14 operators who have been part of building this city for decades has been an unbelievable experience, and has taught me the correct way to conduct myself on the job. Due to the support I’ve received from the Local and the members, my confidence level in my future is higher and brighter than I ever could have imagined. Every step of the way the members have gone out of their way to make sure I am in a position to succeed.”
