Letter to the Editor – Pass The Pledge

By NYS Senator Mike Gianaris

Dear Neal,
As we enter 2011, we embark upon a new legislative session, a new year, and a new decade. Facing the same old problems, we need a new approach: change the players, change the game, and finally change New York.

With new leaders and a new conference, the DSCC and Senate Democrats are ready to move our state in a new  direction. As the newly elected Senator for the 12th District in Queens, and the newly appointed Chair of the New York Senate Dems, I look forward to doing my part to bring change to New York.  Backed by a clear mandate for reform,

I was one of five new members of the Democratic Conference elected to the State Senate. I know each of us is anxious to enact so many of the improvements New York needs at this critical time.

Also working with me to mobilize Democrats, strengthen our political operation and recruit good reform-minded candidates to win back the majority, are my new Co-Chairs at DSCC: Senators Neil Breslin, Andrea Stewart-Cousins, and Jose Peralta.

Their expertise and assistance will prove invaluable as we take the necessary steps to bring the Democrats back to the majority.  But our most important ally in building a broader Democratic Majority and a better New York is still the people.

Before the election, 53 of the 62 current members of the State Senate signed former Mayor Ed Koch’s “New York Uprising Heroes of Reform” pledge – and we intend to hold them to their promise with a simple message: Keep Your Promise, Pass the Pledge.

This week, Senate Dems launched a new website and online petition at

www.PassThePledge.com.

The site calls on all Senators to immediately pass reform legislation that will:

• Create an independent redistricting commission so legislators can no longer draw their own districts.• Strengthen ethics and disclosure laws and create an independent oversight commission to improve the standards of conduct and accountability for all elected officials.• Take the politics out of budgeting to stop the practice of fiscal manipulation that encourages the state to spend more than it has.  We encourage all New Yorkers to log on and join the Senate Dems in the fight for reform to ensure that promises made become pledges fulfilled. With your help, we can finally deliver the reform the public expects and Albany needs.
