Intel Cafeteria Workers Vote for Union

Santa Clara, CA – Food-service workers at Intel’s headquarters here voted 31–12 to be represented by UNITE HERE Local 19, the National Labor Relations Board announced Sept. 14.

The last union workers there were laid off in November 2014, when the computer-chip manufacturer hired a new food-service contractor that replaced the entire staff. The current workers began organizing in January, and have won 20% raises and free individual health care. In May, they filed complaints with the NLRB and the California Division of Occupational Safety and Health against Eurest, the North Carolina-based contractor that took over in March. They alleged that company officials were retaliating against workers for trying to organize and illegally denying bathroom breaks. The NLRB complaint was settled Aug. 31. “It’s so important that we won the union vote today because now we end the fear of not having enough money to live,” cafeteria cashier Monica Moreno said in a statement released by Local 19.
