Bronx, NY - The new outlet mall slated to replace the Whitestone Multiplex Cinemas on Bruckner Boulevard promises a spate of new construction jobs, and has some elected officials practically giddy with anticipation. But the developer’s suspect record of building in New York City has others convinced that those same jobs will both exploit workers, and negatively impact the surrounding community.

CSA joins DC 37-Local 372, the 25,000 Board of Education Employees Union, in endorsing former educator and school leader, Yetta Kurland for City Council.

The City’s public sector unionized workforce have been working without new contracts for five years, but organized labor will have to agree to health care contributions from active members and retirees and no retroactive pay increases. Fired Workers Sound Sour Note at Arias Apartments

Brooklyn, NY—Building services workers were fired on February 28 for organizing themselves to demand their employer pay them higher wages mandated by law. The 421-a legislation provides tax incentives to real estate developers so long as they pay prevailing wages of about $22 an hour. According to the fired workers, they were earning about $10 an hour. Albany, NY - A recent major victory for thousands of Albany nurses means higher quality care for patients.
More than 3,277 registered nurses have begun receiving settlement payments averaging $1,730 related to a class-action lawsuit alleging that five local hospitals violated federal antitrust laws by conspiring to suppress nurse wages. The SEIU Nurse Alliance played a critical role in developing the research and supporting the RN plaintiffs in the nurse wage antitrust case.

ALBANY NY — CSEA today called for a legislative hearing over the appearance of impropriety at the New York State Lottery. The call came following a published report that a top New York State Lottery official who recently negotiated a multi-million dollar contract with a private vendor is now working for the same vendor. CSEA believes the situation should be reviewed immediately by the Office of Inspector General and J-COPE.
