Metro North Proposal Will Benefit City

Bronx, NY - Metro North expansion is predicted to create 5,400 new jobs, increase home values by up to $142,400 and add over a billion dollars in added business sales in the Bronx. The MTA Metro North proposal includes building four new Metro North stations in the East Bronx on current Amtrak lines, in Co-op City, Hunts Point, Morris Park and Parkchester.
Workplace Deaths Too High - Says AFLCIO

Washington DC - A recent AFL-CIO report, "Death on the Job: The Toll of Neglect," said in 2011, 4,693 workers were killed on the job and about 50,000 die every year from occupational diseases. The report noted that an average of 13 U.S. workers die on the job every day while an additional estimated 137 die each day from occupational diseases.
Victory Is Vowed In Trade Fair Lockout

Queens, NY - The last nine weeks have been tough on the roughly 100 Trade Fair meat department employees locked out of their jobs since March 13. But on Friday, Ed Lynch of the United Food and Commercial Workers International Union, vowed that the many employees who helped Trade Fair CEO Farid “Frank” Jaber build his supermarket empire would be victorious (Watch Video).

In 1969, the author David Halberstam wrote a book entitled, "The Best and the Brightest." In praising the book, The New York Post critic stated that "I predict that this brilliant and unsparing book will stir the conscience of the next generation if not of this."
Unfortunately, the jury is out on this prediction as is so clearly evident today. I would submit that we are in the era of "lackluster leadership."
Cooper Union Charges Tuition and Students Protest

New York, NY - Cooper Union has now eliminated education at no cost and students are angry. On Wednesday May 8, about 100 students occupied President Bharucha’s office demanding he resign. Student sit-ins at the college began last month following the Cooper Union Board of Trustees decision to put an end to free tuition for undergraduates. This policy has existed at the Cooper Union for more than a century. The decision was announced by Board of Trustees chairman Mark Epstein on April 23.

New York, NY—Verizon received almost $200 million in taxpayer assistance after the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001 and promised to keep its corporate headquarters in Lower Manhattan to help the area recover economically. But last week, the company announced plans to market the historic 140 West St. building for luxury condos, prompting union and elected officials to declare Verizon’s actions unconscionable and calling for federal and state action. NEW YORK, N.Y. — Friends of John Liu announced on Tuesday May 14th, that the campaign has reached the fundraising cap and is also eligible to apply for the maximum amount of public funds under the NYC Campaign Finance Program.
The campaign has raised $3,331,600 to-date. The campaign currently has $1,912,517 in cash on-hand. With $605,516 in total matchable contributions claimed to-date, the campaign is eligible to apply for the maximum amount of public funds under the NYC Campaign Finance Program.
