In September 2011, an authorized accountholder for a union organization logged into the union’s business account through online banking to find $100,000 missing. Malware was discovered on the user’s computer, allowing a hacker to obtain the login credentials to access the union's operating account. The perpetrator then illegally transferred the funds to a foreign account at a separate financial institution.

In 2012 alone, the typical loss among organizations suffering a financial loss due to a payments fraud incident was $20,300. All in all, check-related losses have been estimated to be greater than $1 billion in a given year.

Over the past few months I’ve been involved in answering several Requests for Proposals (RFPs) from union organizations looking to evaluate competing banking service providers. Interestingly, the proposals we’ve seen of late vary greatly in content and complexity, which started me thinking that it might be a worthwhile exercise to write something about the RFP process, and in doing so, shed some light on what you should look for in choosing a bank.
