New York, NY – If we're serious about turning around the lives of teens who have come in contact with our criminal justice system, then we have to create facilities specifically designed to foster rehabilitation.

The fact is, kids don’t belong on Rikers Island – and the reality is, they never have. We’re taking steps to right this wrong.

Getting kids off Rikers and creating housing that makes sense for 16- and 17-year-olds who are awaiting trial is the first step toward an adolescent justice system founded on the belief that young lives are never expendable and always redeemable.

These are lives of untapped potential and futures of untold promise. Creating a space with additional classrooms, more educational programming, and expanded access to family will give us a starting point to change the trajectory these young people are on.
