Pittsburgh, PA – British rock singer Elvis Costello has cancelled his concert scheduled for Nov. 1 at Heinz Hall, where the musicians of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra have been on strike since Sept. 30.
“I regret to inform you that our ‘Imperial Bedroom & Other Chambers’ concert at Heinz Hall cannot go ahead, as I am unwilling to cross an [American Federation of Musicians] picket line,” Costello said in a statement released Oct. 19. “I hope that the dispute will soon be settled honorably and amicably.” The Pittsburgh Symphony musicians walked out after unanimously rejecting a contract proposal that would have cut their pay by 15% and switched all but the most experienced orchestra members from a pension to a 401(k). The orchestra has canceled all of its concerts through Nov. 18. Read more
