Crown Royal Distillery Strike Ends

Gimli, Man – Workers at the Diageo distillery in Manitoba have voted to end their seven-week strike, United Food and Commercial Workers Canada Local 832 announced April 26.

The 53 workers who make Crown Royal whiskey had been on strike since March 5, and had overwhelmingly rejected a new contract offer Apr. 1. Outstanding issues in the contract negotiations “will now be dealt with by an arbitrator,” the union said. Those issues include wages, benefits, pension issues, vacation, and sick time. An arbitrator is expected to be selected by May 6, and will hear submissions from both sides before the end of the month. Local 832 President Jeff Traeger said in early April that the union planned to seek arbitration as soon as legally possible, 60 days after the strike began. Read more
