Colorado AFL-CIO Urges State to Protect Health Care

Denver, CO – In a rally at the state capitol Jan. 25, the Colorado AFL-CIO urged legislators to pass laws guaranteeing equal pay for women, keep employers from sending jobs overseas, and oppose Republican efforts to abolish the state’s Obamacare health-insurance exchange.

“It’s unconscionable to me that our legislature actually has a bill on the docket to repeal our health exchange,” executive director Sam Gilchrist said. When he was a child, he related, he’d had to spend two months in the hospital after one of his lungs collapsed from asthma, and his family lost their house and car because they were unable to pay more than $500,000 in medical bills. His insurance company wouldn’t pay because his asthma was a “pre-existing condition.” “It ruined my family for over 10 years,” he said.
