New York, NY – On Wednesday April 5, 2017, the City Council passed my groundbreaking legislation to help close the wage gap in New York City.
The bill prohibits employers from relying on salary history to determine current compensation, a practice that perpetuates a cycle of wage discrimination. In fact, my office found that New York City women are cheated out of $5.8 billion in wages each year.
This move is the culmination of years of effort to make women’s wages more equitable in our city, and is a victory for generations of women who built the path that led us to this point.
We know this will not completely end wage inequity in our city, which is why I need your help.
