Celebrating Labor Day
September 3, 2012
By Tom DiNapoli NYS Comptroller
As we celebrate this year’s Labor Day, let’s remember to honor the origins of this special American holiday and reflect upon the contributions of our nation’s working men and women.
Let us also not forget that the Empire State played a special role in the beginnings of this annual celebration. New York’s unions, as you may proudly know, were among the first to propose a formal day of labor recognition before a federal holiday was established in 1894.
Since then, cities, town and villages across America have assembled to recognize the strength and spirit of trade and labor organizations. These gatherings remind us that, as we work each day to contribute in our own households, we are part of a larger family as well as a strong tradition. Our work secures a better future and our work sustains the health of our society.
I wish each of you and your loved ones a happy and relaxing Labor Day.
