Scarborough, Canada - Teachers at the Islamic Foundation School in this Toronto suburb voted overwhelmingly to join the United Food & Commercial Workers Local 175 on May 1.

The union said it believes the 42 full-time teachers there have formed the first union ever at an Islamic school in Canada. “The teachers at this school are dedicated to the children in their classrooms,” Local 175 President Shawn Haggerty said in a statement. “Joining the union means that they can better their workplace so they can continue to give back to their community.” Local 175 said key issues included a lack of respect on the job, time limits on vacations, poor job security, and an inadequate compensation package. The school, founded in 1993 has more than 600 students from pre-kindergarten through twelfth grade. It emphasizes “excellence in scholarship as well as moral and spiritual development,” and says it’s one of the top 10 schools in Ontario, based on test scores. Local 175 said it is trying to start talks on a first contract. Read more
